Meet the Midwives

5 Independent Midwifery Practices with Privileges at Bellingham Birth Center

Your Birth Plan Begins Here

The first step in making a birth plan is to schedule a consultation with 1, 2, or more of the experienced midwives who offer Bellingham Birth Center birth.

With us, you get to choose between the 5 independent midwifery practices that have privileges at Bellingham Birth Center.  The midwives are a supportive group and help each other out in a pinch, but each practice is separate and has its own clients.

You can interview as few or as many of the midwives as you would like. Once you choose a practice, that is who you will see throughout your pregnancy, birth and postpartum.  You won’t need to meet a new person each visit and repeat yourself.  She will know you, and you will know her.

All our midwives are skillful, generous, dependable midwives who are respected members of the community ~ you really can’t go wrong  🙂

Since 2002, Gentle Hands Midwifery has been providing authentic, individualized midwifery care, balancing the age-old wisdom required to attend families during labor with just enough modern technology to ensure the safety of parent and baby. In our work as midwives, we employ such tools as gravity, immersion in warm water, a supportive environment, the freedom to move, kindness, and patience.

Labor and birth, while being basic bodily functions, have the potential to be shockingly beautiful experiences, filled with intimacy and triumph. It is our work as midwives to hold the space for the particular patterns of each family’s birth as it unfolds, stepping in to intervene as necessary.

My work as a midwife is deeply important to me. It is an absolute honor to walk with people on the massively joyful (and sometimes very hard) road to parenthood. I get to witness parents meeting their children for the first time, siblings meeting their new best friend…love at its best. I see lactation consulting as an extension of my role as midwife. After all, the real adventure begins when the baby arrives and this is when parents need support and guidance the most. I love helping families navigate life with their new baby, find their confidence, and settle into their new normal. This work is not always easy, but it’s always worth it.

When I’m not catching babies or helping their parents feed them, I spend my time hanging out with my own awesome little family. We like to eat, go on adventures, and have dance parties in the kitchen.

Come see me, I’ll make you a cup of tea.

My commitment to you is to sit with you through all of the highs and lows you may encounter on your path to parenthood. I will help you find the information you need to make informed decisions about your and your baby’s care and honor your personal goals, values, and all that makes you the unique person you are. Whether your path to parenthood is joyful, complex, or a mix of both, I am here to support you every step of the way.

I believe that the best pregnancy care happens when there is a strong level of trust between the midwife and client. Because of this, I prioritize genuine conversation and invite you to show up as your most authentic self. You are valued, you are safe, and you belong here.

If you’re looking for a midwife who will walk beside you with compassion, knowledge, and respect, I would be honored to be part of your journey.

Shortly after completing a Bachelor of Science degree in 1973, I heard the word midwife and knew that this was my path. I completed my midwifery studies at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in 1976, followed by an intensive internship in Kentucky, working with low-income patients at a government funded clinic.

I have been working in Skagit and Whatcom counties since 1980. In June of 2004, I graduated from the Hahnemann College of Homeopathy. I am also a nurse practitioner and do Well Woman Gynecology care.

I specialize in out of hospital deliveries. I believe that birth is a pivotal life event for both the mother and the baby, and that the care and company of the midwife must support the mother during her pregnancy and birth. It is the goal of the midwifery practice to care for the mother and protect the natural process of birth.

I have been married since 1973. My husband, Paul, is a Chiropractor. I have one son who was born in 1979. I love the outdoors and spend a lot of my free time hiking and gardening.
